In Japan, when students are in same grade, they use common Japanese. don't use polite Japanese. Use polite Japanese to acquaintance and senior grade.
It's a little interesting for me that your friend, UK people, care of the Japanese social system, when you use Japanese. I heard that when people use another language, the character will be change to the person who use the language. Certainly, I saw some Japanese people who are ordinarily modest change the character when they start to use English.
I learned around the area in linguistics class that taught languages control our brain!
Mmm, I once heard of bad reputation of that movie. I think movies is like that having exaggeration somehow in order to earn money. I think the important thing is memorizing, especially in documentary. No matter how exaggerated that movie is, there is a fact that a Korean student was dead trying to rescue the man fallen on the railroad.
Tattsunさん I agree, and everybody I have spoken to about this incident have said the same as you. However, I would rather be accused of being too polite than being rude. So therefore I tend to use polite Japanese more often than usual now. By the way - the woman was Japanese - not British. I dont know if my character changes when I speak Japanese... I haven't thought about that one!
Unikunnさん They changed alot about スヒョン's life in order to make a more 'interesting' movie. An event like this happened at the station where I lived in Tokyo a few years ago. A police officer tried to save a woman who was trying to commit suicide. He succeeded - the woman was saved - but the police officer lost his own life in the attempt.
My younger friends around me never use polite Japanese to me... lol.
I will sometime feel 'mental distance' when someone younger and close use polite one.
By the way, when Japanese say 敬語, it can, almost always, strictly indicates ていねい語. However, I think, they don't distinguish and acknowledge them well.

Mmm... But being too polite can also be considered rude. Its a double edged sword... :(
