Kind of settled in my mind
I like Japan. I like Graphic Design. But I've figured that I'm not enjoying my work placement in Japan as much as I'd have hoped. Its a great experience and I'm very happy to have achieved actually finding somewhere that will sponsor me. But, for a range of different reasons, I'm 70% sure that I'm not looking to work in Japan permanently after graduation.
This work placement has also helped me to come to realise... I like typography. I like text. I'm yearning to design something with a decent amount of text in! In previous jobs, I've always had to deal with text - be it advertising or corporate brochures. What I am doing in my work placement - movie posters, frozen food packaging, logo design, typographic design - doesnt ever involve a large amount of text. I miss you text... :( As well as that, Japan only has about 15 fonts compaired to the millions of fonts that Roman characters have. I'm being deprived!!
Also, overtime. I'm not a great fan of overtime, and Japan has more overtime than England. It would be OK if it was overtime for things that needed to be done... but most of the time its not. I feel like I'm wasting my life at work doing pointless things and not getting any reward for it. Whats the point of living in Japan if you can't actually get to 'live' in Japan? I'm not a workaholic, I need time outside work. Its only healthy.
Having said that...
I might try again after graduation for another work placement in Tokyo, this time within an English company doing more of the graphic design I like - magazines, brochures, leaflets, etc... (TEXT!!) Whether or not I'll achieve it is another thing... but I'd like another perspective before I say goodbye to living in Japan for good.
Whatever happens, I'll definately go back to Japan time and time again... I'm still aiming for proficiency in the language and I'll still watch Japanese TV Dramas... I'm addicted :p

がんばってカレコラさん!!
I'm currently to apply for my first job/company, be it that it's an English company. I also have a design company in mind I want to work at. Friends of mine work there, so maybe it's different, hanging out with them as well. But yeah I can imagine working overtime on something that is rather a bit useless is not so much fun. How long is your internship?
Take it easy and try to enjoy the scenery and the environment as much as possible. :)
Good luck for the design company you have your eyes on..! It would be too spooky if it was the same company as me...! :) My internship ends in 2 weeks time, I have to go back as Uni starts. Today was a fun day. I was doing design I enjoyed. Maybe if I find the right job I'd enjoy it here. But its hard finding the right job when I'm in England...
