New branding

London won the bid to host the 2012 Olympics in 2005 with the above logo. This logo oozes confidence and trust, and although I didnt like the over-use of colours at first, I can see its potential. The above branding can easily adapt and adjust to different circumstances and things.

For some reason, someone somewhere felt the need to change this branding. They said the above logo didnt 'speak to everyone' and didnt 'interpret everyone's feelings on the 2012 Olympics.' True, it might not, but you can't please everyone all the time. Especially in design. They wanted a "dynamic, modern, flexible" logo that would not only look fresh now, but also in 5 years time. I personally think the above logo can do this. ...But hey, what do I know?!

Nearly half a million pounds later, the sparkling new London 2012 Olympics logo is below!! ta-da~!
Now, isnt that something to be proud of? Doesnt that intepret everything you feel about the Olympics?

Personally, I dont think it is a logo that will still look fresh in 5 years. The style is from the 1980's, which is having a bit of a style-revival now, but will become dated very quickly. They seem to be trying to make the logo more appealing to young people through attempting to make it look like street art or graffitti. But street art is one thing, graffitti is another. If you want it to look like street art, get a street artist to design it. Not a graphic designer. This logo just looks like it designed by an old person who is trying too hard to be cool, and in the process just making everyone cringe. ...So the whole world will cringe when they think of London 2012. I'm so proud!!

The use of jagged ever-blinking bright blocks of colour in the motion advertising just hurts your eyes. Why have they chosen that childish italic font to write 'london' in? This logo doesnt make me trust London or the Olympics. "It is the emblem of a jagged, dis-united, broken nation that lacks coherence and has lost direction." Well said Philippe Granger from Lewisham.

The amount of negative response to the new logo is amazing. Its so amazing that it makes me wonder...is it all a publicity stunt? Look, you can even send the BBC you own alternative 'better' logos. Everyone is talking about the new logo. Heck, even me. If it had have been an impressive quality logo, how long do you reckon people would have spoken about it for?

"...You can't please everyone all the time. Especially in design."

I agree, it looks terrible. I couldn't tell what the random shapes were supposed to be for like 2 minutes. I watched the animated adverts, and the whole thing look like some sort of 1980s children's TV show, with horrible fluorescant pink...
You really can't try to be "progressive" or different when you're doing logos for this kind of important traditional event.
Sigh.

if you look at the new logo and compare it with the olympic logos of the past , this one is very different. the first logo fitted in more with the others. Maybe it is bland as they say, but it looks dependable and trustworthy. (Has to be good then if it makes me think London is trustworthy and dependable!!)

i heard they had to ban the animated adverts as it was giving people epilepic fits! haha... i bet the company who design the logo want to dig the hole for themselves, huh?!
