I attended a good lecture today.

Get rid of your ego.
Get rid of whatever you done before.
That was then. This is now. Whatever you done before might have been great, might have been crap, who cares? Its was only a stepping stone to the now. Its the now that matters.

This is University.
This isnt work.

No, your coursework doesnt have to be complete by the end of the day, its a 2 month project. No, your boss isnt standing behind you or screaming down the phone every 10 seconds. So, do the unthinkable - play.

Design is about playing. This is something that gets lost in the run-of-the-mill design companies like I was working for. Time is money, and clients want their designs quick. But this is University. So when the teachers tell me to chill I have until Christmas to complete it, understand them, dont question why it has to be dragged out so long. This is Uni, not college, not work. In Uni, they dont consider it 'dragged-out'. They consider it 'research & playing' time.

I might be happy working for the run-of-the-mill companies, but the teachers want us to be something great... so... better keep schtum about that... !!

They also talked about studying abroad for a semester/summer. Mainly Europe and America... but... what about Japan? I did some research, and the options arent good... (one University...) ...oh, and you have to be American. >_< What is it about Japan and America???!!

But... also got me thinking about the future. How exactly will this degree help me? I know I wanted to do it for better job options in the UK and opportunities in Japan.. but.. what about internships? Can I even do an Internship in a Graphic Design company? I dont know and I dont know how to find out.

Like everything else in University, they like to make you run ten miles before telling you its across the road.

I'm scared about telling my future hopes to the teacher. For one, I've only just begun. Another, they might not be too pleased to hear that I'm only half passionate about design.

The lecturer said: To be a good Graphic Designer you need to be on the outside looking in. Things that might help that are living abroad or speaking another language. You need to not except things the way they are. Being a designer can be a lonely world. Its certainly a stressful one. You need to be 100% committed to design to be a good designer. (uh-oh..)

...Well... 3 out of 4 aint bad, huh?

Maybe this course is not for you as it is not so structured, but other universitys do the same course but with more structure. I think this one is good nbecause it allows me to develop my own style and my own way of thinking without having to do something within the lines that the teacher has marked. For example, in the love hate, we do whatever we want.It depends on your chosen idea what is the final outcome. If the teacher says that it has to be a poster, then for some people this would not be a good interpretation of what there idea is. So, I chose this course.

I dont know if you can transfer. If it is a possibility or not I dont know. But I dont think you should, you have only just joined so you are going to have some difficulties adjusting.

It is true that you have to forget your ego. This can help you with the course, but it mustnt overtake the course, you know? you cannot say "but we dont do it like this at work" because maybe your company they didnt do it like this, but maybe another company do. Everywhere is different and just maybe think of this project as a work, but for a workplace that likes to see you experiment, to see you play. They want to see a sketchbook full of rubbish and then you develop something and then more rubbish and lots of sketchbooks to show you have thought alot. Only turning up with the final outcome is not good. How did you get there? You need to show it like a diary. Everything you do, you think, you need to photograph it or draw it or paint it, or cut it with wood, whatever.

Think of Uni as a new job that wants things a different way.

I'm not interested in transferring now. Its not worth it. I'm getting used to things... Friday's assessment results were a wake up call, as was thursdays lecture. Got to chuck away that ego...
