「三億万事件」

１９６８年１２月１０日の朝、東京府中刑務所横の通りで、TOSHIBA府中工場の従業員のボーナス、約３億円の現金が入った金属ケースをせた、日本信託銀行国分寺支店のげんきんゆそうしゃが、白バイの若い警官に停止の命じられた。警官は「あなたの銀行の支店長宅がぼくはされ、このゆそうしゃにもダイナマイトが仕掛けられているという連絡があったので調べます」と言って、乗っていた銀行の係員４人を降ろし、車の下にもぐり込んだ。

しばらくすると、警官はあわてて出てきて、「爆発する。危険だから下がって！」と叫んだ。車の下から赤い炎が吹き出した。４人がけいむしょの壁まで下がると、警官は運転席の乗り込み、現金とともに走り去ってしまった。これが、日本の犯罪史上類をみない「３億万事件」である。

銀行員が犯人の言葉をすなおに信じてしまったのは、事件前に犯人が支店長宛に脅迫状を送りつけていたからだ。赤い炎は、犯人が用意しておいた発炎筒に点火したものだった。犯人は現金ゆそうしゃを途中で止め、あらかじめ用意しておいた、ぬすんだ逃走用の車に、お金の入った金属ケースを移し替え逃走した。さらに、この逃走用の車も途中で止め、用意していたもう一台の車にお金を移し替えて逃走し、まんまと捜査網を潜り抜けた。

現場に残された白バイをはじめ、班員が残した遺留品が１２０点もあったこともあり、犯人検挙は時間の問題と思われた。しかし、それらの遺留品は滞留生産の物ばかりで、そうさをかくらんさせるために、犯人がわざばらまいたものだった。犯人は警官に偽装するため、オートバイを白く塗装し、白いヘルメットをかぶり、綿密な計画にもとづき犯人を実行したのである。

Obviously, the police launched a huge investigation, and posted 780,000 montage photos of the thief. 110,000 people became suspects, but, the largest investigation in Japanese history ended with no arrest in 1975. The montage picture that was released is even more mysterious. It was later realised that the man in the photo is in fact a man who had died at a construction site in 1967 - a year before the theft was even held. The police used a picture of a dead man who had no connection to the criminal or the case. --Could it be the police were involved themselves? --Could it be a fake death by the construction worker?

This case, still left unsolved today, has been made into books and films such as 「三億万事件」　starring 北野たけし. This brilliant crime in which the perpetrator stole so much money without ever being caught and without harming anyone has even been praised by some people.
