공동경비구역 JSA

After visiting the DMZ JSA (Demilitarized Zone, Joint Security Area) in Panmunjom, and learning more about South - North Korean history, I decided to watch a film that the tour guide had recommended. The film, 공동경비구역 JSA (English title: JSA), is loosely based on a true story.

A South Korean troop mistakenly find themselves past the North Korean border when out on a routine check. They quickly retreat, unknowingly leaving one soldier behind - Sgt. Lee. Sgt. Lee makes another error and mistakenly steps on a mine and cannot move. He is found by two North Korean soldiers who save his life and set him free. Sgt. Lee feels indebted to the North Korean soldiers, and starts to correspond with them via letters thrown over the 'Bridge of No Return'. They become friends and Sgt. Lee regularly starts to risk his life and secretly cross the border to visit the two North Koreans. However, one day, the two North Korean soldiers are shot, supposedly by a South Korean. Sgt. Lee was found shot but alive at the scene. He becomes the prime suspect, but the number of bullets found at the scene doesn't add up. Did Sgt. Lee really shoot his North Korean friends?

The trailer of the film has to be one of the worst trailers around, so I don't recommend watching the trailer... Just move straight onto the film!

I found the photo at the end of the film -- as above -- really powerful.
