The first Tesco 'convenience store' opened in Oizumigakuen, in Nerima-ku, Tokyo, yesterday. (Above pic)
Tesco already have around 100 stores in Japan under the name 'Tsurukame Land' but have now decided to use the Tesco name. The store is aiming to be a 'conbini' just like 7/11 or Lawsons, but from the above picture, it still looks like a mini supermarket to me. However, if the lighting is so bright inside it hurts your eyes as you walk in, then... I guess it might pass as a conbini...!! ^^w
Tesco is alright... but the style, design of the shop and their own-brand packages do not make you want the food inside. I understand its target audience are people whose main objective is to spend less on their weekly shopping, but personally, I feel Sainsburys are much more successful in this target range. The packaging, the colours, the layout, the logo... combined it just makes me more hungry than Tesco. On top of that, the sandwiches are nicer in Sainsburys ^^ Japan already has a view that British food is yucky, so having a Tesco's there might not help a great deal... :/
Oizumigakuen... thats not far from where I used to work...
I'll have to have a peek to see if Tesco has gone all Japanese... ^^

I think its a shame. Tesco, McDonalds, WalMart, KFC, 7/11... I dont like global stores. I find it interesting how they adapt to their immediate environment, such as the special burgers you can get in Japan but no other mcdonalds worldwide, but I hate the fact they are there. I like one-off shops or national stores.
the way english people shop and the way japanese people shop is surely different.
Have yet to see a Tescos in Hong Kong, but by golly the place is jam-packed with McDs and 7/11s... which I think is pretty convenient. Need to go to the toilet? Head to your nearest McDonalds. Need today's newspaper along with a quick ready-to-eat microwaved meal or Pot Noodles? Please pop into the 7/11 just down the road.
One-off shops are nice and all, and can be a novelty, but internationalized chains, whatever part of the world you're in, gives an unconscious sense of mental stability... in my opinion anyway ;)
I kind of agree with both you M_x and you Jingle!! there hasnt been a time when I am abroad and I dont go to eat at a mcdonalds or buy something from a shop I know. It is comforting when you are in a foreign country to go into a place and know what you will get.
These stores also provide convenience. But Japan already has a lot of convenience stores, so they dont really need any more competition. There are food shops galore in Japan. They dont really need another foreign supermarket/convenience store.
...But... I'm curious to what its like inside all the same.. :)
