Layout Pad, not Sketchbook.
Fineliner, not Paintbrush.
Computer, not Easel.
I'm trying to shut my moans away and get on with it, but...
I can just about handle 3 years in a Graphic Design course.
I cant handle 3 years in a 'wannabe art' Graphic Design course.
I dont know what I expected from University. I think I expected it to be like college, only with more work and more students. At college I was given max 1 month to do a brief - from start to end product. From research to outcome. At University, I'm given 6 weeks to do research, which in that time, I'm not 'supposed' to think of the end product at all, and then 5 weeks to do the final product. For me, its odd. In college, in work, I'm always expected to do things in a fast turnover. The fact that I have to fill up a sketchbook with 'ideas' without allowing myself to think of the final design is impossible for me. And...why a sketchbook? How am I supposed to try and develop my ideas in a sketchbook? Wouldnt a Layout Pad, with its thinner paper be better? Isnt that what 'designers' use?
The teachers are never around. You turn up at 10, the teachers turn up at 10.20. And then they dont get on with it. When the lesson is through, they run away. When you find them, they dont want to talk to you about your work. They say 'my office hours are Tuesdays, 2-4.' Gee, thanks, but... I WORK on Tuesdays. Does that mean I cant speak to a teacher about my work?
I started 4 weeks late, and therefore I was supposed to be given 2 weeks lee-way. But my 2 weeks worth of work got assessed with everyone else's 6 week work yesterday. What happened to the lee-way?
University. I'm hardly ever there. When I am there, most of the other class isnt. Monday's are my only 'full day' and thats 10-4. For me, thats half day, I'm laughing. But not when I want to feel part of this course. Not when I need to feel as though I'm getting into the assignments given.
University just seems very unorganised. And too much concerned with 'art' and not 'design'.
3 years of this? I can only hope it gets better.
I can only hope my first impressions have been seriously wrong.

Hey K. everything is hard to get used to when you first start at it. You'll get used to their way of doing things! Dont compare, dont judge, just accept.
