...was ..well, a first day.
Some people seem nice, some people need to grow up a tad still. The teachers are all a tad behind the times, but whats new? Apparantely, I used to be a 'paste-up artist'... or at least, thats what the teacher called it. I wonder when the last time he worked in the real world? Paste-up artists died out in the late 80's when computers got taken seriously and took over in the design world. You wont find any job adverts looking for 'paste-up artists' now... What I did - an Artworker - is a totally different kettle of fish. (is that the right expression?)
Also, they seem to think that Quark is the new wow tool of the design world.
...er, ...everyone's using InDesign now...
So, yup, I've got to go back a few years a play 'being a designer in the 1980s' for a bit. Hopefully the course will somehow modernise. Or at least, I've got to keep my eye on the real world whilst there.
I want to go to Japan to live, the reason why I'm at University, but... not if it means playing with the Omnicrom machine for 3 years.
But hey, it was only my first day...

Wow, so your first day was today? I thought my university started late in the start of October, but the end of October blows us out of the water :D
It sounds kind of interesting (and frustrating) to have had real industry experience and then come back and see what the university professors are trying to claim is the current "industry standard". In computer science we hear a lot about industry standards but most of us take it with a pinch of salt as information ot the contrary is easily found online.
As regards different design software, are they forcing you to use one particular program over another, or can you submit a final piece that you've made using another application? I guess if they're teaching you how to use A in class all the time, and you come back having used B they won't be too happy.
Either way, I hope you enjoy it more. At uni, there's always a real mix of people, with a huge number of immature idiots in the first year. Don't worry though, there are always more mature people like yourself (and I guess me) that aren't so obsessed with getting drunk every night.
well.... my first day was yesterday.. everyone else's was at the beginning of october... >_< cos of work and a pre-booked holiday i started late, which the teachers said wasnt a problem as long as i got the module done on time. ...however, i just got a phone call that contradicts that.
so far, the teachers havent impressed me. maybe i should have researched universities more, but it was difficult being at work 24/7.
i guess it is annoying for the teachers, having a student with industry experience.. with all the other students believing what they say is industry standard. so im going to keep relatively quiet unless they ask us to do something rediculous. my college course started out like this too, so i have hope it'll modernise.
bit late probably, but im going to have to find a 2nd/3rd year student to see what they've done...
