I need more practise wrapping the egg around the rice...!!

Omuraisu is a Japanese dish consisting of fried rice (with chicken, onions and mushrooms... or anything you choose!), mixed with ketchup (a very 'Japanese' ingrediant huh?!), wrapped up in a layer of just cooked egg & usually topped with a splodge of ketchup. (Or demiglace sauce, or anything, depending on what your rice is mixed with...)

If you think rice and ketchup dont go... think again! :-)

Ooh! Omuraisu!!
I was kind of fascinated by this dish before I went to Japan. I mean, I like omelette, I like rice, and I like ketchup so it must be amazing, right?
From pictures and my concept of omelette, I thought that you made an omelette as normal, and dumped cooked rice into it to make a nice chunky omelette with some other vegetables in it, that you fold in half and put ketchup on.

You can imagine my shock when my girlfriend makes it for me.
"It's just rice wrapped in an omelette?"
"Yeah... What did you think it was?"

I didnt know about it when i got to japan, i saw lots of other people eating it and restaurants selling only this, but i never ate it until my homestay mother cooked it for me. You couldnt keep me away from those restaurants then! I especially loved the omuraisu restaurant in Harajuku, was it called Apple Tree?... i forget :(

Why dont you cook how you thought omuraisu was going to be and see how it turns out? Could be a new form of omuraisu - could name it something wacky and introduce it to Japan..! :)
