Blair

(Below is the post I wrote this afternoon)

I want to live in Japan again.
But, I dont want to go to University.
However, if you want to live in Japan, then University is a must.
Thats why I decided to go to University.

This morning, I went to my University interview. I got an unconditional offer.

But, is there really no other options other than going to Uni?

Uni is too expensive. 3,000pounds a year. 3,000pounds a year for 3 years.
Even if I was to go to Uni, by the time I graduate I'll have no money left. No money left to go to Japan anyhow. And when I graduate, who's to say I'll get a job? I might be stuck with the same problems as I am now. One good thing about Uni is: the opportunity.

What should I do?

(Below is the post I wrote this evening)

Today, all day long, I've thought about what to do for the best.
Should I go to Uni? Should I stay at work?

Yup, as I originally (ish) thought, Uni is the best option, huh? I'm going to Uni.
The thing that threw me was the 3,000 a year. My friends only paid from 1,500 a year. But, thanks to that nice little man Mr Blair, the University tuition fees have gone up - as of Sept 2006. (doh!)

Cheers mate! >_<

Although I don't have much advice to offer, I'm in the same boat as you, if that's any consolation. If I stop university and come back after a year in Japan, I might have to pay the increased fees.
Like you I'm not sure how much use University is going to be for me (in particular a 3-year vs a 4-year course).

I've even been considering finishing my degree here after my 3rd year, doing a year's intensive Japanese-language training at a university, and then getting a Master's in a Japanese university. Although it's pretty mad.

If you got an unconditional offer, you must be pretty damn good, right? What kind of stuff did you get at A-Level? Do you have a good portfolio?
If you don't go to university, then I think your chances of getting a job are really dependent on your experience and your portfolio. If you have a kick-ass portfolio, and experience in some other useful fields (translation, business, anything), and you can speak Japanese and English, maybe you could find something in Japan. Although it's a matter of finding the right job.
If you can't find a job with a Japanese company in Japan, the other option is to try to find a job with a UK/US/Aus company that wants English-speaking people in Japan for whatever purpose.

As before, I'm sure you've thought of this all already..

Nick & Ben:
thanks :-)

Im waaaaaay out of touch with University and studying. It was like the teacher was speaking another language to me when he was talking about top-up fees conditional & unconditional offers. I take it a unconditional offer is good then?

..haha!! how the hell did I manage to convince him I was any good?!

I didnt do any A-Levels, I went straight into a Diploma course in Graphics. (I knew I could get a job with this course without uni... life is strange...)

Ben - are you at University already or not then?

Have a great Long Weekend all :-)

(...all we need now is some sun!)

..plz?

Yeah, getting an undonditional offer from a good university for a good course is Really good :P
I only know a few people who got unconditional offers and they were geniuses, so your talent must be pretty damn good.

I'm just about to start my 3rd year of CS at Southampton University. I went straight from school without a gap year with a couple of A-Levels. I can choose whether to finish after this coming year with a BSc or finish after a 4th year with an MEng, and I'm not really sure which to do.
